Subluxation Degeneration and Incontinence: What’s the Connection?

Have you been suffering from incontinence and back pain? If so, a common condition known as subluxation degeneration may be to blame. Subluxation degeneration is a broad term that is used to describe situations when elements of the spine deteriorate due to unresolved damage or misalignment. When incontinence is involved, the sacrum, coccyx, lumbar and thoracic areas may be deteriorating. They contain parasympathetic and sympathetic nerves, which directly help to control bladder function. The nerves are specifically located in the areas known as S2 through S4 and T11 through L2. When they become pinched, dislocated or damaged, messages sent throughout a body’s central nervous system are lost, mixed up or delayed. As a result, the injured party is apt to experience varying degrees of urine leakage throughout the day and night. This happens most often when the amount of urine in the bladder reaches 400 milliliters or more. For most people, that’s the equivalent of 14 fluid ounces of their favorite beverage. On a positive note, studies have shown that by relieving the pressure put on to those nerves and putting the spine back into alignment may help decrease episodes of incontinence. The effectiveness all depends on the individual and the reasoning behind the subluxation degeneration. For example, one study that appeared in a 2006 issue of the Australian Journal of Physiotherapy showed that back pain in women had a strong correlation to incontinence problems. There was a connection to breathing problems as well, which wasn’t surprising given that our spinal cord plays a central role in respiration as well. A Look at the Different Stages of Subluxation Degeneration

Many times, people are diagnosed with arthritis, simply because they suffer pain or limited mobility in one or more joints. In many cases, the problem is not actually arthritis, but a subluxation degeneration caused by uncorrected spinal damage that then causes calcium deposits to form on adjacent bones. Here is a look at the different stages of subluxation degeneration, along with some warning signs that will let you know if you might be in one of the different phases. Stage One: Normally begins with a misalignment of the spine due to injury or overuse. Slight curving of the spine may occur, causing disc spaces to become altered. During this early phase, there may not be any pain whatsoever present, yet curvature could be easily recognizable with x-rays. If left untreated, the condition will likely advance into stage two, which could take months or even years depending on the degree of curvature. Stage Two: Typically characterized by a loss of movement or pain in one or more areas of the back. The spine may also develop bone spurs or abnormal growths, which further distort the space between the vertebrae. Soft tissues surrounding the discs may also begin to deteriorate from the added pressure caused by misaligned bones. Stage Three: The most severe stage. Happens whenever subluxations are left untreated for an extended period of time. It results in the eventual fusing of joints together, and can also lead to permanent nerve or soft tissue damage. Patients in this stage may have reduced mobility, and live with almost constant pain that severely limits their activities. Have you ever taken a look at an X-ray or model of the human spine? If so, you may have noticed all of the parts involved.
