Chiropractic Advice for Children Carrying Backpacks

It’s no surprise that we discovered that a Kansas City chiropractor went on his local fox affiliate news station to make sure people in his community knew how to help their children wear a backpack properly. With school a few months in and homework starting to weigh down backpacks, this kind of helpful advice comes at just the right time. Chiropractic care is helpful for children, and preventative suggestions go a long way. Students who are wearing their backpacks improperly or with too much weight are at risk for having back and neck problems, as well as problems with their posture. In the Fox4KC News Story, “Chiropractor Shows Proper Way to Wear Backpack,” Sean Felton gave this advice for analyzing your child’s posture: “View your child from the back and from the side with and without a backpack. When viewed from the side, your child’s ear should be centered over the shoulder and the shoulder over the hips. When viewing from the back look at their hips and shoulders and make sure they are level.” Posture problems may be an indicator that your child is carrying too much weight in their backpack. Ideally children should never carry more than 10-15% of their body weight in their backpack. Children should wear both straps to distribute the weight more evenly, and the bottom of the backpack should fall about two inches below the child’s waist.
