Celebrities Using Chiropractic: Stars Know How to Treat Compressed Discs

Now that baseball season is here, we can’t help talking about sports celebrities using chiropractic. One name that many, long-time fans of the Boston Red Sox will remember is Wade Anthony Boggs. The Baseball Hall of Famer and 12-time All-Star third baseman has openly admitted to receiving professional, chiropractic care during the course of his career. At the time of his first visit, he was reportedly experiencing back and leg pain secondary to a compressed disc. Repeated visits to a sports minded chiropractor resolved those issues for the pro athlete and we’re not surprised to learn about his positive experience. For years, studies have shown that disc and sciatica problems may be effectively treated with chiropractic care. One of the recent studies appeared in a September 2014 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine. It reconfirmed chiropractic care’s effectiveness when combined with regular exercise. The list of treatments used by chiropractors involved with the study included spinal manipulation. However, there are other treatments that contemporary chiropractors use to address celebrities’ back and leg pain. If Wade Anthony Boggs was still playing pro ball to this day, his sports chiropractor may recommend the use of disc-compression tables, decompression-reduction-stabilization therapy, trigger point therapy and TENS therapy. They are just four of the modern-day treatments chiropractors are using to address problems associated with injured discs and sciatica pain. The list of others includes, but isn’t constrained to epidural injections, acupuncture, non-steroid anti-inflammatory medications and back surgery. It should be noted that depending on the severity of the compression and its location, athletes may experience comorbidities like shortness of breath and gastrointestinal distress. As such, additional treatments are often recommended to help address comorbidities as needed (e.g. oxygen therapy and restrictive diets).
