Why pregnancy is a real pain in the back

Why pregnancy is a real pain in the back

Of all the things people with kids told me about what motherhood would be like, one has held truer than most: your back will never be the same. It starts in pregnancy, as the body releases relaxin, a hormone that loosens the joints and ligaments – and eventually softens and lengthens the cervix – in preparation for childbirth. That almost sounds pleasant, right? It relaxes your muscles to make childbirth easier. Unfortunately, it feels more like you’ve been put on a medieval stretching rack, and some evil hunchback is turning a crank that’s slowly pulling your pelvis apart. Labor can be difficult on the back as well, especially if the baby is positioned in such a way as to cause what’s called “back labor”, another innocuous term for intense lower back pain, generally thought to be caused by the baby’s head pushing against the lower back. Chiropractic for Children: Give Baby’s Spine the Attention it Deserves

Chiropractic for Children: Give Baby’s Spine the Attention it Deserves

When a baby is first born, many parents like to examine their little darlings from head-to-toe. Oftentimes, they run across physical characteristics that give them cause for concern. For example, they could be watching the baby and notice that its spine seems to be unusually curved. Afterward, they may wonder if the curve is normal or something that requires chiropractic for children or other medical intervention. Rest assured that like all other parts of a baby’s body, the spinal column will change over time. The curve we mentioned earlier is something that generally happens in utero to all healthy infants. It is a natural occurrence that serves several, helpful functions. For instance, it typically aids babies in achieving their respiration, digestion and temperature regulation needs. It also allows the baby’s body to develop without any undue stress being put on to its musculoskeletal system. From the moment of birth until baby takes his or her first steps, much will happen to the spinal column and surrounding areas. As such, early chiropractic care has the potential to help reduce stress on the baby’s musculoskeletal system and ensure that everything continues growing in the right direction. Chiropractors are also experts at identifying which infant and toddler products may help verses hurt a child’s spinal development. For example, there are car seats, prams, baby slings, strollers, cribs and carriers that may do baby’s spine more harm than good. The same may be said for high chairs, booster seats, swings, jolly jumpers and ride-ons that children often use during the early years. As such, expectant parents may want to speak with chiropractors before making nursery purchases or adding requests to their favorite gift registries. The majority of chiropractors are often all too happy to make baby product recommendations before and after a child’s birth. Image courtesy of Taoty/...

Chiropractic Treatment For Summer Back Pain

Chiropractic Treatment For Summer Back Pain

Summer is the time for fun activities and action. With the kids out of school many people planning getaways, there’s definitely a lot to do. Whether it’s tossing a football in the backyard, toting supplies for a family picnic, or traveling on vacation, you’re bound to be more physically active during summertime. And with all that extra activity, you may be putting more strain on your back than you realize. Not to worry though; by keeping up with chiropractic care and following a few simple rules, you can enjoy everything summer has to offer while still feeling great. >Travel can be a large strain, and a major cause of subluxation. Between carrying heavy luggage and spending long hours in a car or plane, there are plenty of opportunities for your spine to get out of alignment. There are ways, however, to make traveling a little gentler on your back. Be careful when picking up heavy travel bags, lifting with your legs rather than back muscles to prevent straining. If you’re going on a long trip, make sure not to spend too much time in one position; it’s a good idea to get up and stretch as often as you can. When working in the yard – whether it’s gardening, mowing, or other outdoor chores – use the same caution you’d use in traveling. Try not to spend too much time stooping and bending, and be sure not to overwork any one part of your body. If you do a lot of heavy outside work during the summer, your chiropractor can show you stretches and exercises that will help strengthen your back muscles and prevent future backaches. Warm weather means more chances to try outdoor activities you may not usually have a chance to enjoy. If you aren’t used to a lot of physical exertion, you may find yourself more prone to injury. If you do strain your back, be sure to seek treatment with chiropractic as soon as possible to prevent any problems from getting worse. There’s no reason to sacrifice summertime activities to save your back; with a few precautions and regular chiropractic care, you can savor a summer that is both fun and pain-free! The Benefits of Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy

The Benefits of Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a unique and special time in a woman’s life, and should be filled with the excitement and anticipation of welcoming their new baby boy or girl into the world. What it shouldn’t be is a period of dealing with unnecessary aches, pains, and soreness. Thankfully, chiropractic can help relieve much of the discomfort that can be brought on during pregnancy. Some women may be concerned about whether or not chiropractic is safe for them and their baby. The answer is yes; not only is it safe to use chiropractic care for pregnancy, it is also remarkably beneficial. During pregnancy, the body becomes stressed by the change in hormones, biomechanics, and weight gain. Chiropractic adjustment helps relieve this neck and back pain, and it can also prevent sciatica – a condition often triggered in pregnant women due to pressure in the lumbar region of the spine. As the pregnancy continues, extra weight and loosening ligaments cause slight shifts in posture. Chiropractic helps maintain correct posture of the neck and back, as well as keeping the pelvis balanced, which is especially important during the later stages of pregnancy. A misaligned pelvis may reduce space in the uterus, leading to a higher likelihood of breeched birth. The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) recommends chiropractic care for realigning the pelvis and providing the optimal chance of a safe, easy delivery. Regular chiropractic visits help to make the entire experience of pregnancy more comfortable, by relieving symptoms such as nausea, headaches, constipation, indigestion, and insomnia. Chiropractic is the natural way to ensure that your nine months go smoothly, and that your baby gets a healthy start to life. Image courtesy of Adamr/...

Benefits of Chiropractic: Drop Kick Annoying GERD to the Curb

Benefits of Chiropractic: Drop Kick Annoying GERD to the Curb

Don’t let annoying GERD continue to put a damper on your culinary adventures. Drop kick it to the restaurant’s curb instead with the benefits of chiropractic care! How is that possible? Believe it or not, there is a verifiable connection between the spinal column and the human digestive system. Let’s quickly look at a few studies that will help prove our point: Over the years, a large body of evidence has been built up around the spine’s connect to a person’s digestive tract. The research tends to center on the lumbar region but the thoracic and cervical vertebrae have also been proven to play a role in incidents of GERD among certain members of the population. Case in point, a December 2008 study that in The Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association indicated that manipulation of the thoracic and cervical spine in infants has the potential to reduce pediatric GERD. Studies focusing on the lumbar region’s connection to GERD instead include, but are not confined to the following: Journal of Spinal Disorders & Techniques (March 2015) Neurogastroenterology & Motility (Oct. 2013) European Spine Journal (Feb. 2012) Clinical Orthopedics and Related Research (Dec. 2011) Journal of Biomedical Research (Aug. 2011) What all of these studies indicate, whether directly or indirectly, is that manipulating the musculoskeletal system in the right way will likely halt severe heartburn in its tracks. The reason rests inside the spinal column itself. The human spinal column is made up of nerves and bones that work in concert with soft tissues. If the bones go out of alignment, they cause the soft tissues to become misaligned as well. In addition, the misalignment may pinch or otherwise disrupt the autonomic nervous system, which controls gastric secretions and other elements of the digestion. Chiropractic care resolves those issues thereby eliminating heartburn and other digestive problems too. To find out if the advantages of chiropractic care will solve your family’s heartburn problems, please contact a chiropractor for an evaluation. Image courtesy of Cooldesign/...
